I've got this idea to train myself to run a sub 20min 5K. Okay, I stole the idea from one of my MTB friends who's training to run one as well. I thought if he can do it so can I.
I began looking up HOW to accomplish this task and found some good training guide lines that looked feasible. I even set them up into three blocks of three week training sessions. Making the first three weeks a little easier and the last three weeks a little tougher. The third week of each block will be a recovery week. So two weeks training, one week easy no structured running or biking. If you are interested in seeing this "training schedule" I'd be glad to send it to you and get your feed back. I will caution you though, I use the words "training schedule" VERY loosely. It's there, but I may skip or improvise things along the way. Yes, deep down inside I'm not as motivated as I'd like to think I can be.
The problem that I've JUST realized is that I don't have a deadline for myself. The only time line I have is my nine week "training schedule". It never occurred to me before my friend Andrea said "you can do it", that I might need to have some culmination of my efforts. A point at which I can say my goal has been achieved. When would that be??? When should I 'peak'? I have no idea! Maybe at the end of my nine weeks? What if I reach my goal before that? What then? You people with training experience will have to offer incite into this one because I have no idea at all. I think I was just planning on running willy-nilly till I reach my goal.
Ok, I'm really not that freaked out about when I'll reach my goal. Knowing me (procrastinator) I'll let it drag out all summer and finally start working hard around August for all the fall 5k's. So that nine week will probably more like 12 weeks. Yes, it's true I'm less committed than a lot of you. And if I reach my goal, I'll probably be like Forest Gump and just stop all of a sudden. So maybe best to NOT reach my goal? Perpetual training? So if you've read this far you're vested in my plight. Give me your favorite 5k run in KC that's at least 10 weeks from Feb 1st. Maybe then I'll have a deadline to shoot for. I am running the Ground Hog run Jan 31st to get an idea of how much I need to improve.
Now, that I'm thinking about this whole process. I've never set a starting date either. Hmmm, kind of tough to achieve something that never gets started. Let me see, when would be a good time to start this whole running thing....
