I think it's working. I've had fun running this spring and had a couple great running experiences. First the Gods Country duathalon in Lawrence KS. Started out strong on the 2mile run, my heart was racing up near 200bpm to entire run.
Transitioned into the bike leg in about 5th place I think. Went back and forth with some guys during the bike leg. I even dropped my chain. It cost me a couple places but I soon got them back. I'll admit I was an aggressive rider during the bike leg, speeding up and taking a tight line so not to allow the guy behind me to pass. I think I was 4th or 5th coming to the transition.
Jumping off the bike and putting on the running shoes again was tough. The legs and lungs liked the bike pace better. I soon settled into a breathing rhythm but the legs felt tired the entire 2 mile run. Thankfully I was neck and neck with this other guy during the last mile or so. I wasn't about to let him pull away after fighting with him on the bike (no not literally) but doing all I could to stay in front of him.
The last mile was down the flat chat of the levee. I hung with the guy the whole length and thank goodness he was there. I would have slowed down if he wasn't right next to me. Towards the finish the course turned off the levee and the last 100 yards was over uneven and very soft soil with thick uncut grass. It was do or die. I kicked in all I had and pulled away from the other guy. Finished seconds in front of him.
Turns out he was in my age group so I was so glad I worked so hard to beat him. I ended up fifth overall and second in my age group. The guy I beat was from western or central KS. Good to see this duathalon attracting the attention of regional athletes. I'm ready for next year. Ready to stay on the heals of Tige Lamb. :)
